It certainly is silly season, and the political parties are all trying to outdo each other with who has the most stupid silly ideas. Even the so-called sensible ones have joined in.
It all started with the Greens who are well known and respected for their general intelligence and deep understanding of how the New Zealand economy works. The Greens proposed nationalising parts of Foodstuffs. Only 2 point something billion dollars, a bargain. And with the Green party’s super duper management skills, guaranteed to be cheaper and better and all round wonderful. What’s not to like about such an amazing clever idea.
Well we know how that will turn out. Send the new company into bankruptcy by incompetent management. Taxpayer subsidies to reduce the prices, and eventually selling or closing down the remains of the company at taxpayers expense. The Greens at least have an excuse for coming up with such a stupid idea. Nobody expects sensible ideas out of the Greens, and they certainly obliged with that one.
But National Party, what is your excuse? You are supposed to be the sensible ones, or at least that is what you would like us to think. And then not to be outdone, Labour piled in. A lemming circus. Where is the leadership? Where is the common sense? Whatever else you say about Winston, he got that one right.
So government, you can say goodbye to luring an overseas supermarket chain into New Zealand. Overseas chains, please come and invest in New Zealand so we can split you up or nationalise you. Great idea. There are consequences when stupid people open their mouths.
